myLot Topic Discussions| I'm Mad at my Cat.....But it's not Her Fault! | | My husband and I were watching American Idol last night when I went to open the door to let my cat choo choo in. She comes in for the night, she is black and has a choric sickness which we give her antibiotics for. Anyhow I looked down on the ground and saw a dead bird. Now thats nothing new my cat does eat birds she is an outdoor cat during the day. But the thing is this was an indigo bunting, a pretty little bright blue song bird. It was migrating though and stopped by our feeders to eat with the female who is brown in color. We found her dead too the day before. Now it wasnt my cats fault, but such a Pretty Bird to be killed is so sad to me I started crying and my heart just dropped to the floor. My hubby and I were watching them all weekend because they were so different looking we never seen one before and knew it was just mirgrating through. I have to get that off my chest, I still feel bad about it. Now what do you think about this? Would you be upset with your cat, would have you done anything different like keep the cat in when you saw the birds? Are cats colorblind? Not that it matters a bird is a bird to them, am I right?Diane
| | Gotta look good for my girlfriend | | I have been trying for months to get this cardinal that likes to look at itself in my neighbors' side mirror and I had to shoot this from inside my window so its a bit darker, and I had to keep the flash off so that glare wouldn't come through the window, but I finally got one, I would have to be outside waiting when he got there because he is overall shy and as soon as I ever sat out there the bird would never return, but today I was able to get him from inside
So while not the greatest shot its still a cute shot.

| | Your Views on Birds. This is 'Greater Rattle-Tailed Drongo', Close. | | As per the requests from my valuable friends here, I am putting a good picture of the 'funny bird' whose name I have mentioned many times in mylot and is repeated in the title here. This is a bird that loves a lot of attention, and it looks at you and sings for you, but always from a safe distance. The ones I have befriended are still a bit camera-shy, but I guess I will be able to get some better pictures in the near future. I keep trying. BTW, if you have pictures of this bird (taken by you, not from the sites) please do share them here. I also invite your pictures of any bird that has something interesting about it.
P.S. ( I guess this is a better picture, Grandpa Bob. I am still hunting for my best pic!)

| | A beautiful bird with a weird name | | Here is a picture of my hairy woodpecker! I have no idea why they call it that, he has feathers instead of hair. But he's a very pretty bird and visits the suet feeder every day. That makes 2 kinds of woodpeckers I've identified this year and there is a third one but I haven't discovered what he is called yet.
Do you have any idea why this would be called a "hairy" woodpecker? The name is rather laughable.[em]lol[/em]
| | The Great Power in "Little Things" | | Yesterday I was in a bad mood, and I went outside wiht a black cloud over my head to get some air, my head filled with dark thougts, when my glance happened to pause at something on the grass. I saw a gorgeous black butterfly with iridescent blue trim and delicate white spots. AS I watched it sunning it's wings, my mood lifted and I forgot all about whatever it was that had made me cranky. The whole day got better and the world seemed brighter and prettier. Today I sw a yellow butterfly wtih black trim on its wings flitting around the flowers in my yard, despite the overcast gray day we're having here, I had sunshine in my heart at that sight. The "little" things in life can do wonderful things with us if we allow ourselves to enjoy them, whether it's the sight of a butterfly or pretty bird or maybe a lovely flower that has sprung up in some unexpected place, they are precious gifts that we should cherish, even if only for a moment. Are there any "little things" among life's surprises that help you to forget your troubles when you stumble across them? | |

| | My Parakeet is almost human! | | I adopted a parakeet about a year ago from a friend who discovered he was living on her balcony. I assume he is fairly old and Ihave done a little research on the bird. I have found nothing that says that parakeets learn to talk, almost as good as parrots. Mine, LeRoy, knows his name, is out almost all day (with two cats in the house) and talks in almost complete sentances! Is this extrodinary or what? For example I was cutting pizza the other day on the stove, and he flew on my shoulder, got near my ear, and started telling me "I like it. Tasty. I want some. Pretty bird LeRoy." Is this normal that our Parakeet talks this well? | |
